Contour lines and Hillshade maps

This plugin reminds of good old physical maps we used to have back in the day. It actually works several ways — as a terrain contour lines data provider and as a full hillshade map using dark shades and colors to show slopes, peaks and lowlands.

How to use it

To see the contours of a specific area, just go to Manage map files menu, find your country or region, choose Contour lines, Hillshades or both and download the files. Then zoom your desired area until you see the lines and zoom even more to check the height of a specific spot (the number on the line). To view hillshade, p make sure you enable this option in Configure map - Hillshade menu. Also, please note that while Contour line file can be split by regions, hillshade files can be available by coutry, thus, you'll see the Hillshade download on the list of downloads of a country, not on the region downloads page.

You can set the minimal zoom level where the contour lines will become visible. To do so, please go to Configure map - Show contour lines. Choose the one that's comfortable to you.

You can use both contour lines and hillshade together to get the information from both layers. If you cannot see the hillshade after downloading it, please restart the application.

After that, you'll be able to enjoy a map with all the hills and peaks. A nice option for both practical use and a general knowledge about the area you live in or travel to.

iOS

To turn the contour lines on in iOS, you need to go to Maps & Resources and turn the Contour lines plugin on. Then download the Contour lines map of the area you need. You'll also have to download the Hillshade map if you need it. Also, go to the Map menu in the left upper corner of the map screen and turn the Hillshade option on. That's it. You are now viewing the maps with contour line information and hillshade.

The global data (between 70 degrees north and 70 degrees south) is based on measurements by SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) and ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer), an imaging instrument onboard Terra, the flagship satellite of NASA's Earth Observing System. ASTER is a cooperative effort between NASA, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and Japan Space Systems (J-spacesystems).
