Ski map view shows winter colors and pistes - ski paths down a mountain or cross-country - as well as cableways, chairlifts, amenities and services nearby, which are useful in navigating through the destinations like recreational areas, ski resorts, and terrain parks.

To illustrate skiing location and amenities, most resorts and parks provide their piste map/trail map. OsmAnd Ski Map shows known/popular ski touring trails, officially approved ski areas and piste maps of most ski resorts on the northern and southern hemispheres, in Europe, Scandinavia, central Asia, Japan, North America, and other.

The Piste Maps of OpenStreetMap is the source of data for OsmAnd Ski Map. Combined with the default vector maps, the Ski Map of OsmAnd preserves its accuracy and benefits from a variety of contributors, like: ski resorts, lift operators, instructors, eager mountaineers, winter sports enthusiasts, etc.

OsmAnd Ski Map is delivered as part of the default vector maps, and does not require any extra downloading. However, it is disabled by default. The plugin allows you quickly to enable OsmAnd Ski Map and start to use it. OsmAnd Ski Map is one of the Map Styles that provide extra capabilities by highlighting some objects, while making other less viable.

With the profiles configured individually, it is possible to prepare a Skiing profile specifically for skiing. It will highlight an assorted amount of winter and ski related information on the map. Below are two profiles: the left-hand one is for skiing, the other one is for driving. And the profile for skiing highlights pistes, aerial ways, winter colors, etc. - the map objects useful when navigating through the ski area.

NOTE: The Skiing profile is initially created to be used together with the Winter and Ski style, as by default the Skiing profile is expected to have the Ski navigation established, which is intended for navigating along the pistes. However, what navigation type to use for every specific profile can be changed, and established individually, and thus, the final configuration of the profile, the map style and the navigation is fully governed by the settings made by the user.

Combine mapsโ€‹

The default vector map with the enabled Winter and Ski map style can be added with the Contour lines and\or Hillshade maps. Below are two examples. The left-hand figure shows pistes on the default vector map, while the one on the right shows pistes on the default vector map combined with the contour lines and the hillshade raster map. In the second case, the map unveils more geolocation insights and elevation data to help making an assessment of the complexity, risks, distance, etc.

Ski map optionsโ€‹

While reading the map, it is possible to get other accompanying details, like: the complexity of a specific piste, the type of the trail, if any grooming is conducted, if the path is lit up at night, or other characteristics that might be helpful to skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts.

NOTE: The options covered herein, are worth considering also when using the Ski navigation. As a rule, it is available within the Ski profile. The default navigation for the Ski profile is the Ski navigation, unless it is established otherwise. The Ski navigation is supplied with individual route parameters applicable only to skiing, and builds the route along pistes.

Piste difficultyโ€‹

Being aware of the difficulty of a specific piste makes sense for alpine/downhill skiers, and also anybody who is visiting a ski resort, or area, so that to get straight to the point, and/or turn in the right direction. The difficulty of a piste is displayed with colors. Colors might differ in different resorts as well as in different countries. Below is some hands-on reference.

Beginner pisteBeginner piste
 Easy hillsEasy hills
Intermediate slopesIntermediate slopes
Advanced difficultySlopes of advanced difficulty
Expert difficultySlopes of expert difficulty

NOTE: For more specific guidance on each piste difficulty type, see the OSM piste difficulty reference, and/or any other sources that consider also inclination, the presence of any obstacles and hazards.

Piste typeโ€‹

Pistes differ by type. A type represents different characterstics for a piste to meet the requirements of different winter related activities: alpine skiing, classic skating, snowboarding, sled riding, backcountry skiing, ski touring, mogul skiing, night skiing, etc. Understanding the type of the piste on the map helps in building an optimal navigation route.

Downhill/alpine skiing piste is used for the Ski navigation. This piste type has a direction, difficulty, and most often it is surrounded by the boundaries of the ski resort. When a downhill piste is selected for the Ski navigation, the direction of the piste is taken into consideration. And in case if the Departure and the Destination points are established opposite to the direction of the piste, the navigation goes along the nearest aerial way.

Nordic/backcountry skiing piste is also used for the Ski navigation. This piste type has no difficulty; can, or cannot have a direction, and most often it goes beyond the boundaries of the ski resort. When navigating along this type of pistes, the Departure and Destination points often can be exchanged.

Nordic piste type in Android

Ski touring piste is often used by skiers for a nordic ascent and a downhill descent. The difficulty of a ski touring piste is often marked with the respective color. The Ski navigation can build a route along this type of piste, thus allowing you to combine the piste types.

Other piste types, like: Hiking piste, Sleigh and sled piste can, or cannot be used for the Ski navigation, however, they may be applicable for the On foot navigation, or other.

Piste groomingโ€‹

Grooming is performed by special vehicles and ensure the piste is ready for the respective type of activities: classic skiing, skating, other. The same piste can be groomed differently on different segments. If the pistes outside the ski resort boundaries are pictured being groomed, it is a good sign for those going out for skiing.

To check out the map on whether a piste is subject to grooming, it is needed to enable the respective option in the Details list opened from the Configure map menu. And the map will show groomed pistes, as exemplified on the figures below. The left-hand one shows no grooming, while the right-hand one differentiates pistes by grooming conditions.

To check out the map on whether a piste is subject to grooming, use the Piste grooming option. It makes the map show which pistes are groomed. To enable the option, select the profile and open the Details list, as follows:

Ski slope routesโ€‹

With the Skiing profile, the Ski navigation and the Winter and ski map style enabled, the Ski slopes routes show all types of pistes that the Ski navigation can use to build navigation routes along. Such Ski slopes routes, if enabled, are outlined with the violet color mostly outside ski resort boundaries.

The Routes panel in the Configure map menu, opened for a specific profile, shows the Ski slopes routes among other available options in the app. To view the Ski slopes routes, enable the respective option.

To view what piste outside the ski resort is possible to navigate along, enable the Ski slopes option in the Routes list, opened for the required profile as follows:

Night and lightingโ€‹

The Winter and ski style can be used with the Night mode. It is an obvious choice for someone who prefers dark colors, and/or it is getting dark at night, as well as for those who does some night skiing. Together with the Night mode, OsmAnd Ski Maps can show which pistes has lighting.

Both options are provided with the Configure map menu. To enable the Night mode, look for the respective option within the Map mode section of settings. To make the map show which pistes are lit up at night, enable the respective option in the Details section of settings.

The Night mode and Street lighting can help during night skiing. Both options are available within the Configure map menu opened for the needed profile.

Map data detailsโ€‹
