To explore that, we collected feedback across five language groups: English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish.

The results gave us a clear picture. Users value OsmAnd for its depth, flexibility, and offline capabilities — especially in situations where reliability and preparation matter. At the same time, the survey highlighted areas where the app still creates friction, particularly around usability, search, and routing confidence.

This post shares some of the main themes that appeared across all five surveys.

Who responded​

We received responses from users across five language groups:

In total, that gave us 2,488 responses.

Most respondents were already experienced OsmAnd users. In every language group, the majority had used the app for more than a year. This means the feedback mainly came from people who know the product well and use it regularly in real situations.

What users value most​

Across all languages, several themes appeared again and again.

Users consistently described OsmAnd as most valuable for:

• Offline maps while traveling
• Planning routes in advance
• Hiking and trekking
• Walking and exploring
• Cycling
• Navigation in remote or rural areas
• Recording and following GPX tracks

This confirms something important: for many people, OsmAnd is not just a general-purpose map app. It is a tool for prepared travel, outdoor activities, and offline navigation.

That was especially visible in the strongest use cases by language:

Even with those differences, one core idea was shared across all groups: users rely on OsmAnd when they want control, flexibility, and offline confidence.

What users appreciate about OsmAnd​

The survey shows that users see OsmAnd as:

• powerful
• flexible
• feature-rich
• useful in remote and offline scenarios
• well suited for outdoor and advanced navigation needs

Many users clearly trust OsmAnd in situations where mainstream navigation apps may not be enough — for example during hiking trips, travel abroad, off-road navigation, or route planning far from a stable connection.

This is one of OsmAnd’s strongest product and brand advantages.

The main friction points​

The feedback was positive overall, but one message came through very clearly:

Users value OsmAnd’s power, but many find it too complex.

This theme appeared in all five surveys.

The most common issues mentioned were:

• Interface complexity
• Too many settings or hard-to-find options
• Search quality
• Routing trust and route quality
• Map/data reliability in some cases
• Performance or stability problems for some users
• Friction in GPX and track workflows

In other words, the main challenge is not simply a lack of features.

The challenge is that the value of those features is not always easy to access.

For many users, OsmAnd feels extremely capable — but sometimes harder to learn or use than it should be.

A strong product, but with usability pressure​

One of the most encouraging findings is that overall loyalty remains strong.

Across all language groups, recommendation scores were high. Users clearly believe in the product. But that does not mean there is no risk.

Many respondents said they had at least occasionally considered using another app because of issues such as complexity, search friction, or routing behavior.

That creates an important tension:

• users respect OsmAnd
• users trust its strengths
• but some still turn to other apps for faster, simpler, or more convenient everyday tasks

This suggests that OsmAnd’s biggest opportunity is not only to add more capabilities, but to make the existing capabilities easier to use with confidence.

What users use alongside OsmAnd​

Many respondents also mentioned using other navigation apps in parallel with OsmAnd. This is not surprising — most people have multiple apps for different purposes.

The reasons were fairly consistent:

This comparison is useful because it shows that OsmAnd is not mainly competing on “how many features it has.” In many cases, it is competing on clarity, convenience, trust, and speed of everyday use.

What differs by language group​

Although the overall themes were similar, each language group had its own profile.

German-speaking users​

German-speaking respondents showed the strongest concentration around hiking, walking, cycling, and offline travel. This looks like a highly outdoor-oriented group with regular use patterns and strong engagement.

English-speaking users​

English-language responses were the broadest in profile. They combined offline travel, walking, hiking, route planning, and rural navigation, showing a wide mix of travel, outdoor, and practical navigation use cases.

French-speaking users​

French-speaking respondents stood out as strong offline and travel-oriented users, with high mentions of route planning, GPX recording, and hiking. This group reflects a power-user profile that values preparation and track-based workflows.

Italian-speaking users​

Italian-speaking users showed a distinctive mix of hiking, GPX use, route planning, and motorcycling. Compared with some other groups, motorcycling was especially visible here.

Spanish-speaking users​

Spanish-speaking respondents stood out most clearly for route planning, remote-area navigation, motorcycling, and daily car use. This group appears more road-navigation-oriented than the German or French groups, while still valuing offline and advanced use.

What all groups have in common​

Despite these differences, the common patterns are more important than the differences.

Across all five surveys, users consistently described OsmAnd as:

• a strong offline navigation tool
• especially useful for travel and outdoor scenarios
• more flexible than many mainstream alternatives
• valuable for users who want control over routes and maps

At the same time, all five groups also pointed to similar improvement areas:

• make the interface easier to understand
• make search more reliable
• improve routing trust
• reduce friction in core workflows
• keep the power, but make it easier to use

This consistency across languages is one of the strongest findings in the entire survey.

What this means for OsmAnd​

The survey confirms that OsmAnd already has a clear identity.

Users do not mainly come to OsmAnd because it is the simplest navigation app. They come because it offers something deeper:

• offline confidence
• route control
• outdoor readiness
• map flexibility
• support for advanced use cases

That is a real strength.

At the same time, the survey also shows a clear direction for improvement. Users do not want OsmAnd to become generic or stripped down. They want it to remain powerful — but to feel clearer, easier, and more trustworthy in everyday use.

That is an important distinction.

The goal is not to reduce what makes OsmAnd special.
The goal is to make that value easier to reach.

Let’s Start with a Search​

February is a great time to explore Patagonia — it’s summer in the Southern Hemisphere, with long daylight hours and easier access to remote areas. A quick online search for “Patagonia must-sees” almost always brings up one name: Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981.

So why not make it the starting point of our journey?

Open OsmAnd Web and tap the Search icon on the map. You can search not only by place name, but also by exact coordinates — a handy option when you know the location but not the name. For this example, enter the coordinates -50.000000, -73.000000. The map instantly centers on this point and places a pin in the heart of Patagonia, near Lago Argentino and the glaciers that give the park its name.

Selecting the location opens the context panel, where you can review the position, copy the coordinates, and use quick actions to keep planning.

Explore Nearby and Start Navigation​

With the map centered on the Los Glaciares area, tap Explore. OsmAnd instantly highlights interesting places around you, turning the surrounding landscape into a collection of discoverable spots — viewpoints, lakes, glaciers, mountain ranges, and protected areas.

Each place comes with useful information: a name, category, short description, and often photos. To narrow things down, you can use filters to show only what matters to you — for example, Nature & Outdoors. This makes it easy to move from a broad view of the region to a focused list of places worth adding to your journey. By the way, if you prefer exploring on the go, OsmAnd also offers a similar Explore feature in the mobile app (Android only) — see the step-by-step guide here.

Among the many results, one destination stands out almost immediately: Torres del Paine National Park — this time across the border, in Chile. It’s one of Patagonia’s most iconic national parks, and a natural next step for our route.

Selecting Torres del Paine opens the POI context menu, where you can save the park to your Favorites, share a direct link to it, or jump straight into route planning and navigation.

Choose Navigation, and the selected park becomes your destination point. For the starting point, set Los Glaciares National Park. If you want to shape the journey more precisely, you can add intermediate points along the way — useful when you want the route to pass through specific locations, border crossings, or scenic stops.

Next, select the routing profile that fits your plans. OsmAnd recalculates the route instantly, drawing a clear path between these two landmark destinations and showing distance, estimated travel time, and elevation profile.

What once would have required multiple maps and guesswork now becomes a clear, flexible plan — ready to adapt as your adventure unfolds.

One Route, Multiple Ways to Travel​

Patagonia isn’t just about long roads and mountain passes. In Chilean Patagonia, travel often includes water as well — fjords, channels, and scenic ferry routes that cut through dramatic landscapes. One of the most famous examples is the Navimag ferry, which connects Puerto Montt and Puerto Natales, offering a multi-day journey through Chile’s southern fjords.

When a journey includes different types of terrain and transport, planning everything as a single route can be a challenge. This is where OsmAnd Web Plan Route really shines. In the route planner, you can build one continuous track and change the routing profile for individual segments. Drive between towns, switch to a boat profile for ferry crossings, then return to a pedestrian or driving profile for the next part of the journey — all within the same route.

Using the Change profile option, you decide whether a new profile applies only to the next segments or recalculates the entire route. This makes it easy to adapt your plan as the landscape changes, without starting over.

The Winter and Ski map style highlights ski pistes, routes, and lifts with clear colors and symbols, making it easy to study any resort layout at a glance.

Tap any piste shield to open a context menu showing route characteristics, elevation profile.

And even start navigation along that exact track (treated like a GPX file).

When setting start and finish points in the Skiing profile, OsmAnd builds intelligent routes using ski pistes, descents, and lifts—perfect for complex multi-stage trips.

Enhanced Slope Exploration​

For better terrain reading, enable 3D relief alongside Avalanche coloring to visualize slope steepness and hazard zones clearly. Use the Ski map legend to decode piste difficulties and route types.

Some pistes show night lighting icons—enable Street lighting in Configure map → Details to see which slopes stay lit after dark.

To make your rides even more tailored to the season, you can create a custom Snowmobile profile.

Choose a snowmobile icon fit for your vehicle, set a distinct profile color, and adjust navigation preferences such as speed display, routing types, or road avoidances. Choose Snowmobile map style for this profile.
Whether you’re on a short local ride or a cross-country expedition, your settings will be ready the moment you switch profiles.

Example: Snowmobiling in Maine​

Maine boasts nearly 11,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, including the famous Interconnected Trail System (ITS) covering hubs like The County, Eustis, Jackman, and Rangeley.

To explore these, simply switch to the Snowmobile map style in OsmAnd (Menu → Configure map → Map style → Snowmobile), download the US map region for offline use, and tap any trail for guidance.

For a ready-to-go setup, we have prepared a custom Snowmobile Profile OSF file. Importing this file will automatically set up your profile icon, colors, necessary settings. Just open the .osf file in OsmAnd to activate it instantly.

Avalanche colors requires the OsmAnd Pro version.

1. Enable the plugin: Go to Main Menu → Plugins → Topography (requires OsmAnd Pro).
2. Download maps: In Menu → Maps & Resources, select Terrain map (3D) for your region under Worldwide or Regions.
3. Activate layer: Menu → Configure map → Topography → Terrain → Slope. Choose Avalanche from Modify button (only OsmAnd Pro).

Powered by precise DEM sources including ALOS (JAXA), MERIT DEM, ArcticDEM, and European LiDAR DTMs—for coverage from 70°N to 70°S and beyond.

• Layer with Contour lines (every 20m) for elevation context.

Custom button binding for External Controllers​

OsmAnd now supports customizable buttons for external controllers. You can assign any Quick Action to a keyboard button, allowing for a more personalized navigation experience:

All widgets now feature text outlines, enhancing visibility against various map backgrounds.

Resizable Text in Distance Measurement Tool​

You can now resize the text in the Distance by tap tool. Two variants are available: Normal and Large, making it easier to read distances on the map.

Precision Grid for Aligning Map Buttons​

A new precision grid has been added to help you align your map buttons more accurately.

Temperature Units in General Settings​

The temperature units selection has been moved to General Settings for easier access:

Search Improvements​

Search results now include city info and address details, making it easier to find specific locations.

New Trip Recording Widgets​

New widgets for Trip Recording include Max Speed, Average Slope, and an improved Uphill/Downhill widget that now shows total ascent and descent:

• Average Slope widget displays average slope for the last downhill or uphill section of the recorded track (can be set in settings or by tap to the widget).

• Max Speed widget shows the maximum speed reached during the recording. Tap to switch between the overall max speed and the max speed of the last uphill or downhill (or choose modes in settings).

• Improved Uphill/Downhill widgets, now its can show or the sum of all ascents/descents, or the last ascent/descent of the currently recorded trip.

• Distance widget shows total distance of the recorded track, with modes to view the distance of the last ascent and descent.

Map Rendering Speed​

We have optimized the map rendering engine (OpenGL) to improve performance for rendering maps and map elements, resulting in a smoother experience when navigating and interacting with the map.

Base Autosync to Cloud​

OsmAnd now supports base automatic synchronization of your settings and data to the OsmAnd cloud, ensuring that your data is always backed up and accessible from any device.

Improved OBDII Connectivity​

• OBDII BLE adapters can be connected to OsmAnd.

Added Heart Rate Metrics​

If your GPX track contains info about heart rate, you can now monitor your heart rate during activities with the "Analyze by Interval" feature. You can see your average, maximum, and minimum heart rate for each interval and for the entire track.

Added Downhills/Uphills Analyze​

Now, you can split your track for analyzing downhills, uphills and flats segments.

Improved Plan a Route Tool​

• Added the ability to add POI / Favorite as a via point directly from the map when using the "Plan a Route" tool.

• Show duration for the entire route in the Graph section.

Altitude Units Setting​

The stop record action for audio notes have been added with external device, and the ability to start-stop record audio notes only with external device.

Improved UI for Multiregion Download​

The UI for downloading multiple regions has been improved for better usability and fixing issue with routing for large files. For example, Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany can be downloaded as multiple regions with 4 files instead of one large file: Regierungsbezirk Stuttgart, Regierungsbezirk Karlsruhe, Regierungsbezirk Freiburg, Regierungsbezirk Tübingen.

Target Android 15-16 (API level 35)​

OsmAnd now targets Android 15-16 (API level 35), ensuring compatibility with the latest Android features and improvements.

Improved Search for US addresses (Tiger)​

The search functionality for US addresses using the Tiger dataset has been improved for better accuracy and results.

Improvements for Ski Slopes and Routes​

• Clickable ski slopes and routes on the map have been added, allowing users to easily access information about ski areas.
• Suggest to switch on "Winter and ski" map style when clicking on ski slopes/routes on the Configure map menu.

Update Follow Track Mode​

The "Follow Track" mode has been updated to improve the user experience when navigating along a recorded track with Reverse mode. Now it supports two options:

• Original track: follows the exact track back to the start.
• Calculate route: calculates a new, optimized route back to the start.

New Screen for Add Track Waypoints​

A new screen for adding waypoints to a track has been introduced, allowing users to easily add and manage waypoints while recording a track or for an existing tracks on the map.

Distance Info for Track Overview​

Added distance information for the selected point on the track graph as an additional parameter in the tooltip.

Added Translations for Help Menu​

Help menu now includes translations for various languages (“en”, “ar”, “de”, “es”, “fr”, “it”, “nl”, “pl”, “pt”, “tr”, ‘ua’), making it more accessible to users worldwide.

Documentation is displayed in the language set “For the application” (after changing the language settings, a restart is required).

Our Journey and Focus on the Future​

The scale of this journey is truly humbling. Over the past 15 years, we’ve delivered more than 35 releases for the Android version — and over 25 releases for iOS since its launch.

Today, we’re proud to share these global stats:

• Over 100,000 daily active users (DAU)
• More than 20 million installs worldwide

All these 15 years can be roughly divided into three stages. For the first five years, we built the very basic functionality—offline maps and navigation that just worked. Over the next five years, we transformed OsmAnd into a full-fledged application with plugins, extensive settings, and professional tools. We dedicated the third five-year period to deep internal work: completely rewriting and improving key components like the rendering engine and routing algorithms.

Now, a new, fourth stage begins. We have reached functional maturity, and our main goal for the near future is to polish what we’ve already built. We will focus on stability, speed, and consolidation. User expectations are growing, and what was once considered normal must now be flawless. The application must run faster, be more stable, and feel more cohesive.

How will we achieve this? Through immense attention to detail: deep analysis, manual and automated testing. We will move in fast but very small steps, carefully monitoring the results and listening to your feedback. Our task is to consolidate existing functionality, making it more intuitive and reliable.

Cross-Platform Purchases​

Temperature Units​

The answer: OsmAnd's custom-built Highway Hierarchy (HH) Routing. This isn't your standard routing engine; it's a ground-up redesign, meticulously engineered to overcome the unique challenges of providing advanced navigation on compact, offline-first map data.

Why Standard Solutions Failed​

OsmAnd has always been about putting you in control. Our original A* routing engine, configurable via routing.xml, offered immense power. You could define intricate profiles, avoid specific road types, and truly personalize your journey. With maps optimized for minimal storage (the entire planet's car data for our new HH-routing is around a mere 800MB!), OsmAnd was a lean, mean navigating machine.

However, this flexibility came at a cost for complex routes:

• The A Wall:* Calculating a 200-300km car route (or even shorter bicycle/pedestrian paths) could mean visiting over a million road segments, taking 10-20 seconds. For longer trips, this wait could become frustrating.

We explored standard advanced algorithms like Contraction Hierarchies (CH), known for their speed. But they presented their own set of deal-breakers for OsmAnd:

• Flexibility Clash: CH typically pre-calculates optimal paths. Supporting OsmAnd's 10+ routing parameters (leading to over 1024 combinations per profile!) would be impossible with standard CH.
• Storage Nightmare: A CH car profile for a region can be massive (e.g., OSRM's Europe is tens of GBs, their global car profile around 200GB for just one profile). Our goal was to keep all profiles and parameters for the entire planet well under 20GB.
• Regional Map Dilemma: Users download individual countries or regions. CH usually requires processing the entire road network globally, which doesn't align with OsmAnd's flexible map management.
• Update Impracticality: The extensive pre-processing for CH makes it unsuitable for frequent updates, let alone OsmAnd’s goal of supporting near real-time changes through hourly map updates.

The challenge was clear: achieve a quantum leap in speed while preserving extreme flexibility, minimal storage, regional map support, and dynamic update capabilities. Standard Highway Hierarchies were a starting point, but we needed something more – a uniquely OsmAnd solution.

Secret Sauce #1: Two-Level Routing​

The core of OsmAnd's HH-Routing is an elegant two-level hierarchy built upon "area clusters."

• Area Clusters: The map is intelligently segmented into numerous small regions or clusters.
• Border Points: Each cluster has a limited number of defined "border points" – these are the gateways in and out of the cluster.
• Shortcuts: For common scenarios, we pre-calculate the travel time/distance (the "shortcut") between border points within the same cluster and also to border points of immediately adjacent clusters.

This map illustrates the OsmAnd routing concept. The route starts in the Start Area Cluster (221558), moves to the nearest Border Point, and continues through precomputed Shortcuts across intermediate clusters. It then enters the Finish Area Cluster (221536) via another border point and finishes using local roads. This method speeds up routing by combining local search with efficient inter-cluster shortcuts.

The real magic, our Secret Sauce #1, lies in how these border points are selected. Naive approaches quickly fail:

• Randomly selecting border points or using simple geometric divisions (squares/hexagons) results in too many border points per cluster (50-80). This leads to a shortcut explosion (N*(N-1)/2 shortcuts), making the files large and and calculations slow.
• We even tried building hierarchies with 2-3 levels, but the number of shortcuts grew too fast for higher levels if we generated a full graph inside each cluster.

The "Parking Lot" Insight: Imagine a vast shopping mall parking lot with thousands of individual parking spots and internal lanes (representing road segments within a cluster). No matter how complex it is inside, there are usually only a few key exits to the main roads. Our goal was to identify these natural "exits" for each map cluster. For instance, the complex road network around Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (see on OpenStreetMap) has many internal roads but limited primary access points.

We wanted a scenario where, say, 5 well-placed border points could efficiently represent an area with 5,000 internal points and 10,000 road edges. This would reduce those 10,000 edges to just 5*4/2 = 10 shortcuts for routing through that cluster at a high level – an incredible 1:1000 point ratio and a 30x reduction in edges to consider for the high-level path!

The Algorithm: Ford-Fulkerson to Find the Bottlenecks To find these crucial border points, we employed a clever technique based on the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm. By simulating "flooding" roads with traffic from random start/end points, we could identify the natural bottlenecks – the "minimum cut" in graph theory terms. These bottlenecks became our border points.

Universality is Key: Crucially, this distribution of border points is agnostic of routing speed profiles. It’s based only on whether a road is passable or not. This means the same set of clusters and border points can be used for all car routing profiles (default, shortest, fuel-efficient) and all bicycle profiles (default, prefer flat terrain, etc.). Only the travel time/cost values of the shortcuts between these points change based on the profile. This is a massive factor in keeping storage down – map data only increased by about 0.5% per profile to store this HH-Routing structure!

Just look at the numbers for processing the entire planet for a car profile:

• Original OSM: ~2.07 billion points, ~2.42 billion edges
• Resulting HH structure: ~3 million border points, ~541,000 clusters
• Estimated shortcuts: ~91 million (a manageable number for global routing)

How OsmAnd Builds Routes​

So, how does OsmAnd use this structure to calculate your route at lightning speed? It's a multi-step process:

A. Preprocessing (Done by OsmAnd when new maps are prepared):

1. Cluster & Border Point Definition: The map is divided into clusters, and border points are identified using the Ford-Fulkerson based method.
2. Shortcut Pre-calculation: For the most commonly used speed profiles, the travel costs (time/distance) for shortcuts between border points within each cluster are pre-calculated and stored. (Each border point effectively has an "entry" and "exit" aspect for directed travel).

B. User Route Request (Query Time - this is what happens on your device):

1. Step 1: Connect to the Hierarchy (Your Local Area):

   • OsmAnd identifies the clusters containing your start and target points.
   • It then uses the standard Dijkstra algorithm on the detailed local map within your start cluster to find the best paths from your actual start location to all border points of that starting cluster.
   • The same is done for your target point within its own cluster (finding paths from all its border points to your actual destination).
   • This is quick because it's operating on a very small, localized part of the map.

2. Step 2: Route on the Abstract Graph (The "Highway" Part):

   • Now, OsmAnd performs another Dijkstra search, but this time on the much smaller "base graph." This graph consists only of the border points and the pre-calculated shortcut values between them.
   • This step rapidly finds the optimal sequence of border points and shortcuts to get from your start cluster's periphery to your target cluster's periphery. It's incredibly fast because it's ignoring all the tiny roads within intermediate clusters.

3. Step 3: Refine with Detailed Shortcuts (Applying Secret Sauce #2):

   • The result from Step 2 is a high-level route – a sequence of shortcuts connecting border points.
   • Now, for each shortcut in this sequence, OsmAnd runs its highly optimized A* algorithm on the detailed map, but strictly limited to the small area of the cluster that shortcut belongs to.
   • For example, a 500km route might be broken down into ~100 such shortcuts. If each A* shortcut calculation explores 100-1000 detailed road segments, the total detailed segments visited by A* might be around 10,000-50,000. Compare this to the 1,000,000+ segments the old A* might have needed for the entire route!

This combination – localized Dijkstra, super-fast abstract graph traversal, and highly localized A* refinement – is what delivers the 100x speedup.

Secret Sauce #2: Adaptive Routing​

Speed is fantastic, but not if it means sacrificing the features OsmAnd users rely on. This is where our Secret Sauce #2 comes into play – ensuring HH-Routing remains incredibly flexible and dynamic:

• Full Parameter Support: Because the final shortcut refinement (Step 3 above) uses A* on detailed maps within each cluster, all your specified parameters are naturally incorporated:
  • Avoiding specific road types or toll roads.
  • Adding penalties or preferences for certain roads.
  • Following all the nuanced rules in your custom routing.xml profiles.
• Handling Live Updates & Dynamic Changes: What if a bridge is closed due to a live map update you just downloaded?
  • If the A* calculation for a shortcut (in Step 3) finds it's now impassable, or if its actual detailed cost is significantly different (e.g., >20%) from the pre-calculated shortcut value:
    • Option 1: The system can update the cost of that specific shortcut in the base graph and quickly re-run the Dijkstra search (Step 2) on the abstract graph to find an alternative high-level path.
    • Option 2: For very localized changes, it might even re-evaluate all shortcuts within that one affected cluster.
  • Minor road updates (like those in map data that might be a few months old if you're using maps from different regions) usually result in negligible cost differences for shortcuts, so the pre-calculated values remain effective.
• Graceful Fallback for Extreme Customization:
  • What if you create a truly unique routing profile that's wildly different from the common ones for which shortcuts were pre-calculated? The system is smart. If it detects that too many shortcuts (~50, for example) need on-the-fly recalculation and deviate significantly, it might determine that falling back to the original, comprehensive A* algorithm for the entire route would actually be faster than doing many small, heavily modified A* calculations.
  • Users can also manually switch to the "A*" routing engine in settings if they know their profile is highly experimental or unique.

Real Benefits for OsmAnd Users​

This complex engineering translates into tangible benefits:

• Blazing Speed: The 100x average improvement means route calculations, especially for longer journeys, are now dramatically faster.
• Tiny Footprint: Our HH-Routing data adds only 0.5% to 1% to OsmAnd's already incredibly compact map sizes. The entire planet's car routing data is around 800MB!
• Full Customization Power: All the beloved flexibility of routing.xml and detailed routing parameters is retained.
• Works with Regional Maps: Download only the countries you need. HH-Routing seamlessly calculates routes across the borders of your downloaded map files (as long as they are compatible, see limitations). Clusters that overlap a region's boundary are included within that region's data.
• Supports Frequent Updates: The architecture is designed to work with OsmAnd’s hourly map updates, allowing routing to adapt to fresh road information.
• Future-Proof: This structure makes it much easier to implement features like alternative route suggestions based on these key border points.

Important Routing Notes​

No system is perfect, and OsmAnd's HH-Routing has a few considerations:

• Highly Divergent Profiles: For routing configurations that are not pre-calculated as common scenarios and whose costs vary too much from default configurations, the original A* algorithm might still be faster (and is often used as an automatic fallback).
• Map Version Synchronicity (Important!): For HH-Routing to work correctly when a route crosses multiple map files (e.g., different countries or regions), all those map files MUST be from the same generation date (i.e., downloaded from OsmAnd around the same time, based on the same underlying OpenStreetMap data version and pre-calculation run).
  • If you try to route from a map of France updated in May with a map of Germany updated in April, HH-Routing may not be compatible across the border. You would need to update all relevant maps to the same version.
  • This doesn't mean all maps must be brand new, just from the same batch/pre-calculation period.
• Map Release Schedule: The intensive preprocessing required to generate all these routing profiles for the entire planet takes about 2-3 days. This means new map updates are now typically released around the 5th of each month, instead of the 2nd.

Smart Folders for Automatic Track Organization​

Redesign Image Block in Context Menu​

The image block in the context menu has been redesigned for a more streamlined experience. Now, Online Photos (Wikimedia images) and Street-level Imagery (Mapillary images) are displayed as separate items within the menu.

Gallery Viewer for Wikimedia Images​

Polygon Selection for Nearby Areas​

The Polygon Information feature has been enhanced in OsmAnd for iOS, providing easier access to data about surrounding areas directly from the map.

Now, with a long tap the map or a single tap a POI, you can access detailed information about nearby polygons. This feature makes it quick and convenient to identify geographic or administrative areas around you.

Toggle Visibility for Favorite Groups​

OsmAnd 5.0 introduces an updated visibility toggle for favorite groups, providing more control over what is displayed on the map. This feature, previously available on Android, is now also part of the iOS version.

In this release, you can separately customize the icon, color, and shape for each group of favorites without resetting all attributes. And then override the settings for existing points in the folder, only new favorites, or apply to all. This allows you to visually organize your saved locations more precisely.

In OsmAnd 5.0 for iOS, you can choose icons from all POI categories for your Favorites. The added full icon library allows you to search and select icons using the Сustom POI search, making it easier to organize and personalize your saved locations.

The widget Configure screen has undergone a major redesign to enhance usability and streamline the process of adding, customizing, and organizing widgets.

Resizable Widgets for Side Panels​

You can now customize the size of widgets in the left and right panels, just like in the top and bottom ones. This update offers greater flexibility in configuring the map screen. Choose from small, medium, or large sizes to customize your screen layout.

You can now reset the average speed directly from the widget’s context menu. This update adds a Reset action, allowing you to start fresh measurements without restarting navigation.

Explore Mode: Discover Popular Places​

The Explore mode has been introduced, replacing the History tab, making it easier than ever to discover top-ranked points of interest (POIs). Now, you can explore nearby POIs, view their photos on the map, and easily access your Recently visited locations — all within the new Explore tab. This update makes finding interesting places faster and more convenient.

Key features:

• Explore nearby POIs — Discover popular places and top-ranked POIs based on popularity, with helpful photos displayed on the map and in the search results.
• Recently visited - Access your recently visited (history) places within the Explore tab for quick navigation back to previously explored locations.
• Wikipedia integration - Wikipedia entries are combined with POI details, allowing you to view detailed information, including photos and descriptions for each location.

How to use:
Go to Menu → Search → Explore to start discovering nearby POIs and view your recently visited places.

Popular Places (Wikipedia)​

The Wikipedia POIs feature is integrated under the new Popular places (Wikipedia) setting in the Configure map menu. This update provides expanded settings for Wikipedia content, giving you more control over your experience.

• Image previews - You can now view photos for POIs directly on the map with the Show image previews setting.
• Offline and Online Mode - View Wikipedia POIs without downloading the map data by using the online mode.

All OSM Routes – Now Searchable​

You can now search and navigate all OSM routes directly in OsmAnd — including hiking, cycling, mountain biking (MTB), and other recreational route types. This update greatly improves route discovery, allowing you to easily find and follow existing paths mapped in OpenStreetMap.

Key features:

• Search by route type and name — Find routes by name or filter by categories like Hiking, Cycling, MTB, and more.
• Route overview in search result — See route name, icon, total distance, and distance to the nearest point before selecting it.
• Start navigation or download GPX — Tap a route to open it and either start navigation or download it as a GPX file.

Ski Slopes and MTB Trails Information​

You can now select ski slopes and MTB trails directly on the map to access more detailed information. This feature enhances the context menu with key data such as difficulty level, trail length, terrain type, and more, making it easier to plan your outdoor activities.

Coordinates Grid Overlay​

The Coordinates Grid feature allows you to overlay a grid with geographical coordinates on the map, providing a precise location reference for geospatial navigation.

Key features:

• Multiple coordinate formats — Choose from DD°MM′SS″, DD.DDDDD°, DD°MM.MMM′, or UTM.
• Adjustable zoom levels — Grid lines appear dynamically between zoom levels 2 – 22, adapting to the map scale.

Climbing Areas and Crags​

Now you can explore climbing areas and crags directly on the map. These locations provide essential details such as elevation, rock type, and number of climbing routes.

Detailed Information for Linear Objects​

You can now interact with barriers, steps, gates, benches, and other access-related icons directly on the map. A simple tap on these objects opens a context menu with detailed information, such as the object type, name (if available), and address.

This improvement provides quick access to navigation-relevant data, helping you better understand path restrictions and road attributes at a glance.

Mountain Peak Heights in Feet​

In this update, mountain peak heights are now displayed in feet for users who prefer imperial units. This improvement ensures elevation markers on the map align with your chosen units of length setting.

Key improvements:

• Height display in feet — Mountain peak elevations are now shown in feet as well.
• Profile-dependent units — The display of heights in meters or feet depends on the selected Units & Formats profile settings.

This feature allows for a clearer and more accurate view of elevations when navigating mountainous areas, ensuring users in countries that use imperial units can easily understand peak heights.

USA Address Search with TIGER Data​

The TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) data for US address search is now integrated into OsmAnd. Flexible Appearance Settings for Favorite Groups​

Now you can separately customize the icon, color, and shape for each group of favorites without resetting all attributes. And then override the settings for existing points in the folder, only new favorites, or apply to all. This allows you to visually organize your saved locations more precisely.

Android Auto Improvements​

Navigation with Android Auto is now more informative and route-aware, thanks to two key improvements.

What’s new:

• ETA and Distance to next waypoint — During active navigation, the estimated arrival time and distance are now shown for the next intermediate destination, not just the final one. This helps you better track progress on multi-stop routes.
• Full destination name on preview field — When reviewing your route before starting, the entire destination name is now visible on the route preview field, ensuring clarity when selecting from saved or searched locations.

These updates improve situational awareness and route transparency when using OsmAnd with Android Auto.

AIS Vessel Tracking Plugin​

The AIS Vessel Tracker plugin allows you to display real-time AIS (Automatic Identification System) vessel positions on the map. This feature is essential for maritime navigation, providing details about nearby ships, including their type, speed, and route.

To use, configure an AIS server connection or connect an external AIS receiver.

Key features:

• Live vessel tracking — Ships update based on real-time speed and course.
• Detailed vessel info — Tap on a vessel to see ship name, MMSI, IMO number, type, dimensions, heading, speed, and ETA.
• Configurable AIS data sources — Connect via external AIS receivers or network-based AIS servers.

New Compass Behavior​

The compass button has been updated to provide more intuitive and user-friendly functionality. These improvements make the compass easier to use, help you navigate better, and optimize map orientation control during navigation.

Compass button:

• Single tap. Reorients the map to the North regardless of the current orientation mode. In Compass direction mode, the map briefly aligns to the North before returning to the dynamic orientation.
• Double tap. Cycles through orientation modes, such as GPS direction or device rotation. This function replaces the previous Single tap behavior for switching modes.
• Long tap. Opens a menu with all map orientation modes, letting you choose your preferred setting.

Locked Map Rotation​

A much-requested feature, locked map rotation, now ensures the map remains consistently oriented with North at the top when the compass is set to the North is up mode.

In this configuration, map rotation is disabled, but you can still zoom in and out freely. This enhancement is perfect if you prefer a stable reference point while navigating.

Search by Brand Names​

We're excited to introduce a new brand search feature in OsmAnd, designed to help you find specific places by allowing searches for POIs using brand names.

Whether you're looking for a favorite coffee shop, hotel, or a trusted supermarket, this addition makes locating more efficient. Instead of typing generic categories, you can search directly for brands, personalizing your search results to better fit your needs. This feature not only saves time but also enhances the overall navigation experience.

Widget Context Menu​

The widget context menu empowers you to manage and customize widgets directly from the map screen.

With a long tap on any widget, you can access its context menu to adjust settings or reconfigure layouts without navigating away from the map. This streamlined approach keeps your focus on navigation while providing the flexibility to personalize the map screen on the go.

Redesigned Graphs​

Elevation graphs have been redesigned to improve clarity. One significant enhancement is the repositioning of Y-axis labels to eliminate overlap with the graph lines, ensuring all data remains readable at a glance.

This visual update makes it easier to analyze elevation changes and other graph-based information while planning routes or reviewing tracks.

Track Menu Updates​

The latest OsmAnd version introduces exciting updates to the Track Menu, making it easier to organize, search, and review your tracks efficiently.

Total Tracks Statistics​

You can now view comprehensive tracks statistics right at the bottom of each folder. These details include:

• Number of tracks
• Total distance
• Uphill and downhill elevation
• Duration
• Overall folder size

For example:
Tracks – 4, distance – 246.6 km, uphill – 325 m, downhill – 456 m, duration – 08:50:35, Total size – 14 MB.

This feature simplifies keeping track of your activities at a glance!

Tracks Filters for Search​

Finding specific tracks is more convenient than ever with the new track filters. You can filter results based on criteria like duration and length, ensuring you locate the exact track you need.

Sort Subfolders​

Improved sorting functionality in the Tracks tab, now enables you to organize subfolders systematically. Sorting options make it effortless to navigate your tracks, whether grouped by activity, location, or other preferences.

Updates for Map Mode Menu​

The map mode menu now includes an auto-theme switch that adapts to your app’s light or dark mode settings. This ensures that your map view matches the app’s overall theme seamlessly, improving visual consistency and reducing eye strain during night or daytime navigation.

Grouped Tags​

To streamline the Context menu, all POI tags and translations are now consolidated under a single item. This grouping includes fields such as:

• name
• alt name
• old name

This makes it easier to find relevant information about points of interest without unnecessary clutter.

Profile Appearance Redesign​

The profile appearance has been redesigned for better usability and visual appeal.

Key updates:

• Customization tools. New icon and color selection options for profiles.
• Map redesign. Improved interface for selecting location icons on the map.
• Default 3D icons. Modernized design elements for a fresh look.
• Additional visual elements for the Resting and Navigation positions below my location icon:

  • View angle. Displays a cone-shaped area that shows the direction you are currently facing.
    Status: Off,  Resting position,  Navigation position,  Rest & navigation position.

  • Location radius. Shows a circular area around your icon, representing the accuracy of your current location.

Quick Action Updates​

A new Quick Action button allows changing the Location position on screen. You can enable or disable the display of the previously selected My Location cursor position on the map.

Switch Between Terrain Styles​

In this release, we have added the ability to switch between terrain color palettes, similar to switching between layers. This can be done using the Quick Actions tool.

Touch Screen Lock​

We've added an incredibly useful new Touch Screen Lock option to the Quick Actions menu that helps you easily lock and unlock the map interface.

CarPlay Improvements​

This release brings several CarPlay enhancements:

• Automatic navigation switch to the first Car profile upon CarPlay connection.
• Resolved issues with POI opening hours.

The newly introduced downloading dialog for Maps & Resources, Context menus, and the First start screen improves user experience by streamlining these interactions.

Wikimedia Gallery Viewer​

Introducing a full-screen gallery viewer for Wikimedia images in the map context menu. The image block has been redesigned for easier browsing, allowing you to view and swipe through all images associated with a location.

A dedicated screen displays a list of all available images, making it easier to explore related media. Tapping on an image opens it in a full-screen mode for a detailed view of the place or POI.

Vehicle Metrics​

The new Vehicle Metrics plugin has been added to the Plugins menu, enabling the monitoring of key vehicle performance data using the OBD-II protocol. This plugin offers real-time metrics, such as engine speed, fuel consumption, and coolant temperature, with dedicated widgets for easy access to this data.

Whether you are tracking fuel efficiency or ensuring engine health, the Vehicle Metrics plugin brings valuable insights directly to your device.

GPX Track Activities​

A new feature allows you to assign Activity types (such as hiking or cycling) to your recorded GPX tracks, enhancing track management and organization. You can now easily filter tracks by activity, making it more convenient to organize and analyze your trips. This enhancement streamlines your experience by making sorting and accessing specific activities in your track history far more efficient.

Customizable Map Buttons​

Enhance your map screen with fully customizable Quick Action and Default buttons, including changes to icon, size, corner radius, and background opacity. Through the new grid layout, you can position buttons precisely for easy access.

Button appearance settings can be adjusted via Menu → Configure screen → Custom buttons or Default buttons → three-dot menu → Appearance. Additionally, you can now export and import your custom button configurations, ensuring seamless transitions between devices.

Widget Context Menu​

The Widget Context menu allows you to manage and configure widgets directly from the map screen, providing a quick way to organize panels. You can access this menu by long tapping on any widget to customize the layout of widgets without leaving the map.

Reset Average Speed​

We have added a convenient Reset average speed action directly in the widget context menu. With just a long tap on the widget, you can instantly reset the average speed value during your trip.

This feature makes it easier to track real-time performance on the go without navigating through multiple menus, giving you more control over your trip statistics with minimal effort.

Lock Screen Feature for Seamless Navigation​

We have added a Touch screen lock feature, similar to Garmin devices, allowing you to lock your screen while navigating, preventing accidental taps. This update also brings new quick actions for trip recording and managing the visibility of OSM edits, enhancing your navigation experience.

New quick actions:

• Lock/Unlock screen. This option can be accessed using the Custom buttons:
  Menu → Configure screen → Custom buttons → + → Add acton → Inteface.

• Trip recording actions. Start, pause, or finish your trip seamlessly:
  Menu → Configure screen → Custom buttons → + → Add acton → My Places.

• Show/Hide OSM edits and add an OSM note with one tap:
  Menu → Configure screen → Custom buttons → + → Add acton → Configure Map or My Places.

Ride Like a Pro: Dirt Bike Trails Now Available​

We are excited to introduced Dirt bike trails to improve your off-road adventures! Now you can activate colored overlays for dirt bike routes, based on the dirtbike, just like mountain biking routes.

Discover Nearby Areas with OsmAnd Polygon Info​

These updates enhance Polygon Information by making data about surrounding areas accessible from the map context menu in OsmAnd.

Now, after a long tap on the map or a single tap a POI, you can view detailed information on nearby polygons, including type and name, sorted by size from smallest to largest. This feature is helpful for quickly identifying geographic or administrative areas within your location.

To access: Map context menu → Details → Within.

Introducing Hiking Trail Grades​

We have renamed Difficulty classification to Hiking Trails Difficulty Grade for better clarity and ease of use.

This feature highlights trail difficulty for mountain routes, using either the SAC or CAI scales, ensuring you are well-prepared for your adventure. Both systems help identify the necessary skills and equipment for safe travel.

Find the setting in Configure map → Routes → Hiking trails difficulty grade: SAC or CAI.

Custom Graph Display for GPX Tracks​

We have enhanced the graph toggle for recorded tracks, allowing you to select specific data types, such as heart rate or other available options, and display them directly on the graph.

This update lets you select any available data on the Trip recording screen, making it easier to view critical information during or after your trip, improving your overall analysis of recorded GPX data.

New Route Guidance Widgets (Beta)​

We are excited to introduce a new set of route guidance widgets to the Top/Bottom widget panels in OsmAnd's Configure screen menu. These widgets give you real-time navigation information, including the distance to the next turn, second next turn, lane guidance, road name, and current street name. Perfect for keeping track of your route at every step of your journey. The widgets are active during navigation, ensuring you never miss a turn!

The 3D GPX track feature adds a new dimension. It not only displays the route's elevation but also offers additional data visualization, including speed, altitude, slope, and heart rate (sensors data), for example. This comprehensive view helps users analyze their performance and better understand the dynamics of their route in a realistic 3D environment.

On a bike ride, I use OsmAnd to record my track, while my heart rate is monitored with a sensor. Conditions are constantly changing throughout the ride, terrain, road surfaces, and weather all affect how the trip unfolds.

After the ride, I can analyze my trip in detail using the 3D track mode. The track is displayed in three dimensions, making it easier to study:

• 3D track wall height shows my Heart rate changes,
• 3D track wall color represents Slopes,
• track line color itself reflects my speed.

This detailed view helps me understand how my physical performance and the conditions changed throughout the ride, allowing me to improve my training efficiency and better plan future trips.

OsmAnd allows you to record track data from various sensors, such as heart rate, temperature, bicycle power, or speed sensors, and afterward provides a comprehensive analysis. You can visualize how different aspects such as heart rate, speed, and slope interacted during your ride, all in one detailed 3D representation of the track.

What's New in Version 1.01

Here’s a quick rundown of the new features and improvements:

• Default System Language.

System Language​

OsmAnd Web now adapts to the language settings of your browser. By default, the system will use the language set in your browser preferences:

• Chrome users: The priority is set through chrome://settings/languages.

If you'd like to manually configure the interface language for OsmAnd Web:

• Go to Menu panel → Settings (⚙ icon) → General settings language → click Display language automatically detected to select your preferred language from the list.

New Map Context menu​

In this update, we've introduced a new context menu for the map, making it easier to interact with points on the map. To open the menu, simply right-click anywhere on the map. The following actions are available:

• Where am I – a quick search for your current location on the map.
• Open weather – opens the Weather menu.
• Create new route – opens the Plan a route tool with the selected location.
• Add Favorite – allow you mark and set a point of interest as a favorite for easy access.
• Directions from – sets the start of navigation from the selected point.
• Directions to – sets directions to the selected point.
• Cope coordinates – allows you to copy the coordinates for external use.
• Add pin – allows you to place a pin to mark a location on the map.
• Show regions – displays the regions associated with the selected point.

Explore map menu​

Our Explore Map feature has received a significant upgrade, making it easier to search for places and view points of interest (POIs) with their photos (wikidata source) and description directly on the map.

To get started:

1. Click the 🔍 Search menu to open a tab that displays popular POI categories and the Explore list of sights.
2. The data from the list in the Explore section is automatically displayed on the map.
3. To open the entire list of explore areas, click on Show All in the Explore section.

4. Using the Filter option next to Explore, you can refine the list by selecting the POI category you are interested in.

POI Context Menu​

Clicking on a POI now brings up an updated context menu that includes:

• POI Name (Category).
• Direction and distance to the POI.
• Detailed description.
• Access to the Online photo gallery for that POI.

POI Photo Gallery​

For visual learners, we hasve added an exciting new feature — the POI Photo Gallery. When you select a POI, you wll be able to browse through all available online photos related to that location, giving you a more immersive experience.

Along with these new features, we've addressed several important issues:

• Banner for OsmAnd mobile. A new banner provides information about the OsmAnd mobile app, including a direct download link.
• Precipitation data fix. We corrected the display of precipitation data to ensure accuracy.
• User Data Lag Fix. Improved performance when handling huge amount of user data, reducing lag.
• Zooming Fix. Resolved issues related to zooming when enabling favorites or tracks.
